The Santa Fe River Beautification Project launched Clemens into the field of streambed restoration. As the project landscape architects on an interdisciplinary team, we worked to develop solutions to the complex problems surrounding the restoration of an eroding, hazardous river channel within an urban corridor.
Rigid engineering considerations were a major component in meeting the improvement requirements. However, the public had visions of the river corridor being returned to the city in the form of a park.
A previously developed master plan called for stabilizing the banks of the river in a "natural" appearing way using the latest bio-remediation techniques. In addition to the technical requirements, various public-use interests had to be met. Plantings were designed to re-naturalize the river corridor and to accommodate a wide range of soil and water requirements.
Bike and pedestrian paths were also woven across the river and along the banks connecting river access points and the surrounding neighborhoods.
Our work on the river beautification project over a three year period included research, design, coordination with city staff and officials, and public presentations.
